Writing Discussion & Questions / Re: What can you help with?
« on: February 14, 2017, 01:55:14 PM »
I live in the Bahamas so if you need to know anything about the country itself or tropical islands in general I'm your guy. I also know quite a bit about Bahamian history, having studied it in high school, so you can ask me about stuff like the Arawak and Caribs, pirates, the slave trade etc.

I have degrees in physics and mechanical engineering so you can ask me about stuff related to those as well. My specialty is thermofluids and fluid flow which in regard to fantasy writing could be helpful for things like aqueducts and steam/dieselpunk stuff. I also know a bit about other areas of engineering so I might be able to help with those as well.

I'm nowhere near an expert but I know a thing or two about asian folklore, mainly Chinese and Japanese though I know some Indian as well. I also know a bit about old Norse mythology and ancient Semitic religions/pantheons. So I may be of use with those as well.

Baking is one of my favorite pastimes so I can always be helpful with stuff related to it. I have a fair amount of recipes at my disposal, and I can also help with fundamentals and techniques as well.

I second what Sheepy said. It's kind of annoying being sent to the forum instead of back the thread you replied to.

Voted for option 2, though option 3 would be fine as well.

Do you like the idea of using Google docs?
I'm against using Google docs. If your goal is to replace the library with something more integrated into the forum this wouldn't exactly be a solution. Plus as mentioned it's kind of clunky, and while I do use it to store info I can see why someone might not want to use it to store their stories.
Do you think that the social groups mod that costs $30.00 would be the best option?
I'm not too sure. It looks like it might be interesting, but it's hard to give a real opinion without actually trying it out first.
Do you want to do it the old fashioned way and copy and paste a chapter into a post on the forum, where the formatting might not work out exactly the way it should?
I don't have a problem with this method if there are no better options, but I can see how formatting could be an issue.
Should we just keep the library?
I haven't really used it yet so it's hard to give areal opinion on whether or not to keep it. I personally don't mind the fact that you have to log in to access it, but I can see why some might not like it.
Should we use the SMF groups mod for the $29.99 and see what we can do to set up a library of sorts? Can you see other uses for the groups mod other than using it as a library of sorts? (i.e. maybe role playing eventually, but other things as well.)
Like I said earlier it's hard to say without trying it. I can see them being used to some extent, but whether or not it would be enough to justify the cost I don't know.

Like a several people have said I like the flexibility that writing fantasy allows me. I'm a huge fan of world building, and I love being able to piece together a completely new world with its own unique geography, history, societies and cultures.

When you spend weeks researching how create a language only to use it for a few lines.

Personally I'm fan of when the MC belongs to some form of group or family with a prestigious background, but they themselves are viewed as weak/unworthy. There's something about a character trying their best to earn the respect of their colleagues/family members, or find their own place in the world that I really can get behind.

1. Are the prompts not that inspiring?

I haven't had a chance to look through all of them, but they seem fine to me.

2. Are we not giving enough time to get the entries in (two weeks)? Would month long challenges be something you'd be interested in?

Two weeks doesn't seem like it would be that much of a problem, though I would imagine giving more time might increase the amount of people who participate.

3. Are you just not big on responding to prompts to begin with?

Hard to say since I've honestly never tried to before.

4. Is it not so much the prompts, just that you're preparing for NaNoWriMo/focusing on your own writing projects?

Not really applicable to me.

5. Should we put the challenges on hiatus until after NaNoWriMo ends and just post prompts in the writing prompts section instead?

If enough people want to put them on hiatus then it would probably be for the best.

6. Would you be interested in us asking for prompt suggestions from you, our members, and then conducting a poll to determine which of those prompts will be used for the next challenge?

Sounds unnecessary to me, and I agree with Ahryantah. Maybe have a thread where members can suggest prompts and have the mods choose whether or not to use them along with the ones they come up with.

7. Which of the challenges that we've done so far have been your favorite (or would be your favorite if you'd had a chance to participate)?

Probably "You arrive in heaven to find it abandoned," or the one about a birth of some kind.

And how do you pronounce Tkz? There are no vowels inside. Or are you a robot? ;) I am Elena (pronounced like in Spanish or Italian, with all "e" the same sound).
Well spoken it would be just the letters spoken individually, but you can call me Dwayne if you want as well.
