May Writing Challenge
May 1st - 31st

Prompt: We've decided to give TWO prompts to choose from for this month, due to the Worldsmyths Million challenge. Hopefully the first one is open enough that we can get some interesting entries! You can choose to do one prompt or the other, or you can do both if you can fit them together! (But only one entry per person)

Your first prompt is an illusion. This could be an actual illusion like magic, or a mirage, a deception, or a misleading impression of reality. That's just a few examples too :)
Or
Your second prompt is to share an emotional scene from your current project/Million Words Challenge entry. Maybe your character got angry at something? Sad? Maybe they are stressed and the high energy is causing a mental breakdown.

If you have any other questions about the challenge, please reply to this post!

Wordcount: 5,000 word maximum. Please remember, this is just a maximum, meaning that you do NOT have to write 5,000 words, it just means that you can't surpass it.
Submission deadline: Thursday May 31st, 2018, by 11:59 PM GMT-5 (11:59 PM EDT).

If you already have something written, you CAN and are encouraged to submit it to the challenge!

Voting will be posted on the 1st of June.

All entries should be submitted to the writing challenge submission forum, using the submission form. You are allowed to submit your challenge via Google doc link or by uploading a Word doc to a response to this post as an attachment.

Remember, all entries must fit the fantasy genre.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask either here in the thread or send me a PM! Good luck!

Please respond to this post with the following information filled out in order to submit your entry:

Code: [Select]
Title:
Word count:
Summary:
Link to story:
Do you want feedback after voting ends?

Hello! I'm wondering if the submit by date is a typo, April 30th has already passed.

For glory lit and life alive,
For goals unreached and dreams to strive:
All men must try, the wind did see,
It is the test, it is the dream.

Sooo... this is the short story I started writing for the February challenge *coughs*.
It's still a rather rough draft, but I'm too fed up with editing right now, so I'm submitting it the way it is.

Title: The End of the Rainbow
Word count: 2776
Summary: A poor fellow decides to try his luck and hunt down the end of a rainbow.

Do you want feedback after voting ends? Yep, absolutely. I feel like the pacing is off and there's too much telling and unnecessary information, but I can't decide what to cut and where to expand and show instead - feedback about that would be awesome. I'd also like to hear what you think about it overall (is it original? is it cliché? does it make sense?). Hit me with everything you have, I can take it :)

Edit: I'm actually editing some more right now, I'll submit an updated version later today - I forgot that there are 31 days in May :D

Arapys is a trapped blood god who has commanded his followers to free him by giving him blood sacrifices, the more powerful the creature the better. Thalassa has been hesitant to assist her mother in these ceremonies in the past, but now her mother has captured a dragon, an intelligent creature that is asking her for help. Thalassa doubts her mother's stories about Arapys and his crimes and with the information the dragon gives her is becoming aware that her mother's words don't add up. She wants to find out the truth for herself, so she goes to the one place her mother has always forbidden her to go - the cone of the extinct volcano that makes up their island home.

Title: Claws of the Dragon, Scenes 2-3

Do you want feedback after voting ends? To be honest, I would prefer to wait until the whole short story is finished before I get it critiqued in depth. That said, I wouldn't mind a few general comments (e.g. brief summaries about what you thought) on these two scenes.

Do you want feedback after voting ends? Only very generally, nothing specific. I don't plan to work on it any further.

Do you want feedback after voting ends? Yes, please :) I hope I fixed the pacing and telling issues and threw out all the unnecessary information, please let me know if you think I succeeded. Also, I'd like to hear what you think about it in general (is it original? is it cliché? does it make sense?). Also, don't hesitate to point out language issues or if you think something sounds weird - hit me with everything you have, I can take it :)
