Welcome to the newly named Mix n' Match Storytime! This is part 1 where we will be collecting your answers to the following questions. Give as much or little info as you like, but more is generally better (obviously). So I need 4 things from you;

1. A place

This should give enough of an idea for a setting, tell us about the features nearby. Is it hot/cold, deserted/full of people, rural/town, high in the mountains/down by the sea? Etc.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist

Each character should have a description including their name, what they look like, their likes/dislikes, a flaw and something they are good at, a want or life goal. (p.s a good name finder is behindthename.com :) )

3. A conflict

What is happening between characters or the characters and the setting around them?

4. Wildcard

Add a thing of your choice, from items to personality traits or whatever you like to cause chaotic fun :)

I'll leave this for a few days, please say if you are going to answer but haven't had chance and I'll wait for you. I'm not sure how long this stage will take, but once everyone is done I'll collate them into the next thread :D

Go, go, go!

1. A place

Saltburne - A small port town, very busy. It rises into the mountains that surround it in tiered terraces. Different terraces are marked by different colour roofs, with the poor slums down by the port having flammable wooden roofs. Merchants typically have red terra cotta tiles but the wealthy tend towards imported glazed tiles in a rainbow of colours. It is high summer and it is hot and humid. Tempers run high; only the wealthy are high enough up the hill to catch a breeze. The port is bustling despite the muggy weather, it is the biggest port between the capital and the northern towns and a lot of goods pass through it every day.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist

Protagonist - Annalise Terratini, 22 with long dark hair. She is short and curvy and wishes she inherited her mother's willowy height. She is apprenticed to her mother, who has a fairly successful apothecary shop on the Merchant's Terrace. She never wanted to spend her life surrounded by herbs though. Every day she watches the ships come and go and wonders where they could take her. She wants to see all the ports in the country, that is her goal. She is impatient but never holds a grudge and forgets her anger almost as soon as it flares up. She enjoys cooking but hates eggplant. Loves music but hates her singing voice. Loves her mother but resents the smothering.

Antagonist - Perelia Terratini, 43. Tall and slender with long dark hair. A single mother, she has worked hard her entire life, earning her apothecary certification while raising a young daughter. She now has a small but successful shop that she wants to some day pass on to her daughter. But her daughter isn't interested in the life of an apothecary, her daughter has her head in the clouds, is distracted and unambitious. She is good at getting things done, but bad at knowing how to relax, how to let things go.

3. A conflict

She is at the shop grinding herbs for her mother's medicines when her merchant Aunt comes back to town. Her last cabin girl ran off with a fish seller and she needs a new one. Annalise is immediately interested but her mother doesn't want to lose her only apprentice and heir. Will duty to family or the urge to see the world win out?

4. Wildcard

I've picked a random trope from TVTropes (just click the Random button at the top to get your own!)

Try to include the following trope in some way:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IRegretNothing

"A Stock Phrase used by characters about to or after having done some crazy action, especially if it could result in dying. Very frequently parodied.

One variation is for the character to state a regret other than what might be expected, for example:

Regretting that the crazy action failed in its goal (but with no regrets about doing it in the first place).
Regretting that the crazy action didn't accomplish more than it did (again, with no regrets about the action itself). A common version is a villain regretting that he didn't kill as many people as he would have liked.
Regretting waiting this long to undertake the crazy action (likewise with no regrets about finally doing it).
Regretting some random trivial thing unrelated to the crazy action.
Regretting everything. This one is usually used to parody the normal usage of this trope.
Regretting only that they got caught (which often overlaps with the first two). "

I didn't explicitly connect my pieces. I also went for a slightly more whimsical bent.

1. Place

A crowded supermarket with an overabundance of brownies (the dessert? the fairies? up to you.)

2a. Protagonist

Elo Windthief, the town crier. Nineteen years old. Why she calls herself Windthief, no one knows. She has dark skin and straight black hair. Her eyes change color constantly, although she claims they're brown. She's somewhere around 6 feet tall, taller than most of the men in town, and has just enough muscle on her frame to keep from blowing away, but is nevertheless shockingly good at hiding. She really doesn't like having to tell people things twice; you should have listened the first time. She does enjoy shouting nonsense at the top of her lungs, and occasionally actual news. Most of the town is rather annoyed by her. She flat-out refuses to tell anyone about her past. When asked about her life dreams, she tells people she wants to be a toad, unless it's Tuesday. On Tuesdays she wants to rule the world. As a unicorn. She's probably not serious.

Probably.

2b. Antagonist

Balt of Tiimer-on-the-River. 22 years old, but also technically immortal. He might be a vampire, but no one has caught him drinking blood yet. Maybe he does it on the full moon. No one ever sees him then. He's super pale and his hair looks like it was dunked in a bucket of bleach. He has a similar build to Gaston and sometimes has trouble fitting through doors. He's very, very patient and bad at keeping secrets. Unless he's a vampire - in that case, he's really good at it. He likes moonless nights and sleeping. He hates the sun and generally dislikes people. Unfortunately, he inherited his father's bakery and has to deal with people instead of sleeping. He has a collection of mysterious magical artifacts and a collection of human bones. His life goal seems to be sleeping, but most people who just want to sleep don't collect human bones...

3. Conflict

Across the planet, the wind stops blowing, the rain stops falling, and everyone wakes up dusted in fragments of bone. What's happening, and why does everyone who mentions the oddities disappear?

4. Wildcard

Somewhere, somehow, there is a sentient otter. Her children are missing and humanity will pay.
For glory lit and life alive,
For goals unreached and dreams to strive:
All men must try, the wind did see,
It is the test, it is the dream.

1. They don't need to connect :)
2. That otter is amazing

:D

Setting:
A town on a black beach. It has a thriving community, very insular due to the lack of people moving in or tourists to the town, but its not outright unfriendly. Its warm in summer, though swimming in the sea is discouraged since the beach dyes your skin and clothes, and they get a chill wind coming through the town in the winter. The town is slowly shrinking as people move away for better job opportunities.

Protagonist:
Manon Nahas, a French-Egyptian archaeologist. Shes in her mid twenties and on the short side with golden brown skin. She usually keeps her coiled, blonde hair in a bun or ponytail, especially while doing field work. Passionate is the main word used to describe her. Shes got opinions on everything and isnt afraid to share them. She's also impatient, at least when it comes to planning. Thinking things through is not her strong suit. Her goal is to make some important discovery, not necessarily one that would make her famous, but one that would be of some significance to history.

Antagonist:
Brigitte Poincare is a con-artist. Shes gone by a number of aliases over the years, each of them leading back to a dozen confusing dead ends that leave police unsure of who she really is. The name Brigitte Poincare may actually be just another alias. She changes her appearance a lot, but the staples include her undercut hairstyle, pale skin tone and golden jewellery. Her natural eye colour is green. Obviously, one of her goals is to get rich through her robberies and schemes, but the other is to prove herself by tricking and by-passing all the best security systems.

Conflict:
A mysterious broadcast has been received. It cut off just after your characters learn it's a call for help and the vague location of the broadcaster.

Wildcard:
The protagonist or antagonist needs to kill a family member to achieve their goals. Can they do it?

1. A place
A sacred spring full of stars is hidden high up in the mountains. The the queens of ancient times used to weather the harsh snowstorms and steep cliffs in order to drink from it's waters.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist

Protagonist:
Amelia Jones is an Oracle with dreams of assisting the greater good. She's a bit wishy washy and struggles to pin down what "The Greater Good" actually is but she knows she'll stop at nothing to figure it out. She dislikes selfishness and admires assertion because it's something she wishes she could conjure in herself. She's pale with round dark eyes and sports a buzz-cut.

Antagonist:
Ernest Moore is a half-siren assassin willing to do anything to escape the corrupt organization he works for. he's short sighted and stubborn but very focused and as good at planing ahead as he is at thinking on his feet. He dislikes false idols and people who can't admit their faults, in spite of the fact that he also can't admit his faults. He likes the idea of peacefulness in other people or places but the idea of achieving it himself seems out of the question. he is olive skinned with green eyes and long dark braids.

3. A conflict
On the anniversary  of Queen Eves birth the sun rose red in the sky, all the larks died, and a plague hit the land with instant and devastating force. Five days later on the anniversary of her death the sky turned grey, the livestock fled, and the dead began to rise. one corpse emerging from its grave for each day that passed since.

4. Wildcard
A soup spoon carved from human bone. All who drink soup from it consume the song of the deceased who'll sing in their dreams forever more.

I finally went back and added my antagonist, totally forgot about it.

Can I do a second one? I kind of want to do a less connected one.

1. A place

A swamp. Overcast skies, muggy, lots of flies and mud. But also rare plants. But also ghosts.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist

Protagonist - Tinsy Greywings, a small fairy who was blow from her forest home to parts unknown. She is as tall as a human hand, with copper coloured hair and fairy wings that shiny with a silvery grey light. She is a Dawn Fairy and is good at her job, she chases the night shadows away and paints the flowers with early morning light. She is terrible at reading the weather though, which is what led to her getting lost in the first place.

Antagonist - Selah Miers - 34, a no-nonsense inventor, with blue eyes and a tall, strong build. She is curious and creative and excels at repairing things, though her 'improvements' don't always lead to the item maintaining its original use. She procrastinates on literally everything else though when she gets focused on a project, and tends to hyperfocus at the expense of her health. She wants to prove her genius to her detractors at the Inventor's Guild, who find her inventions too quirky to be useful.

3. A conflict

A stolen item must be returned to prevent fulfilling a prophecy.

4. Wildcard

A clingy ghost won't leave one of the characters alone.

1. A place

A secluded area overlooking the mountains - Its name has been lost to history. The area is filled with the scent of flowers and berry vines cling to the sheer rock burying in the cracks. The shadowy side isn't as beautiful however and who knows what is lurking there.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist

Protagonist: Astara - Pearly eyes flecked with near black, shoulder length messy hair hastily pulled back and tied which frequently never stays in. Her mind is always on the go and she is restless. Adventurer, explorer, stopping her is always a bad decision.

Antagonist: Kamau - Once a prince of a distant land, his fall from grace built on lies and slander. Bitter and hateful, he roams trying to scratch and existence and not caring about those in his way. One day he wishes to take back what is his.

3. A conflict

Bears. Big ones, small ones, some as big as your characters head.

4. Wildcard

A familiar: Mari. A winged creature who has lost the ability to fly. Sharp claws and a keep intellect serve them well however.

1. A place
The Hall of Kings - after you climb a long set of stairs that wind around a mountaintop, you find your way to the entrance of the Hall of Kings. Inside is a long hallway with various images depicting the rulers of the past. In the middle of it is a coffin belonging to the last ruler who died. In front of the coffin sitting on a lectern is the book that contains entries from past rulers. This is where future kings and queens of the kingdom are expected to go when they reach the age of seventeen, so that they can look upon the texts of their ancestors and learn from them before taking the throne. At the back of the Hall is a set of stairs that lead downward through the mountain to where more members of the royal family have been buried.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist
Protagonist
Kenna - human, sixteen years old. She has long, red hair, usually pulled back out of her face, and deep green eyes. She is skinny, but has muscles in her arms due to working on a farm most of her life. She is a former village girl who discovered she had magic abilities and now finds herself as the apprentice to a court wizard who is not much older than she is. Her personality is that of a fiery young girl, someone quick and clever and not one who will back down easily.

Antagonist
Rowan - human, in his forties. He is a former king's guard turned mercenary, standing at over 6 ft tall and broad shouldered. He has short brown hair with long strands that often fall into his face. Once legendary among his fellow guardsman, he was accused of (murder) and banned from his home kingdom. He now roams the lands, searching for work and trying to stay as far away from his former kingdom as he can while deep down he wishes to find out who framed him for murder and bring them to justice. Despite having been framed for murder, he still wears the patch of the kingdom's emblem sewn onto the left shoulder of his cloak - a shield surrounded by a bear's paw print with the three claws pointed upwards. He is a man of few words but also has a fiery temper and is not someone many would dare mess with. He is also the brother of the current king.

3. A conflict

A power source of magic must be protected from a non-human race from far away lands who have begun to invade.

4. Wildcard
Tree of Ages (needs a better name) - an ancient tree holding the spirits of past magic users inside it as well as many secrets.

1. A place
A cave by the sea. The path down to its entrance is steep and requires the visitor to clamber over rough basalt columns that jut out of the frothing ocean, slick with seaweed and water. If anyone makes it down the perilous descent, they are met with the yawning maw of a cavern. It's pitch black inside, but it seems to emit a strange heat that warms the visitor's wind-battered face. All those who enter are hit with a sudden and unexplained onset of panic. The fear drives them away, back up the cliff face at a speed that would have seemed foolish if they'd been in their right mind, until they come to a panting halt on the grassy hill above, unable to recall exactly what had frightened them in the first place.

2. A Protagonist and an Antagonist

Protagonist
Royce - A retired trader who has settled in a sleepy village in the forest. Age is catching up with him and has softly lined his face. His sandy hair is almost all grey, but the same charming smile still shines through his fuzz of a beard.
He's lived a quiet life these past few years since his wife died, and contents himself whitling hand-carved figurines for the local children. His single-roomed house is a mess of wood shavings and past creations, the smell of bark mingling with the bitter notes of the pipe he always has hanging from his mouth.
He dons his old, worn, leather travelling coat once more when his granddaughter goes missing and sets out on the road to find her.

Antagonist
Argan - The faceless man. Where ever he travels, the pox follows. Everyone who has met him struggles to describe him once he's gone. Short, tall, blonde,  bald. A handsome face or a scarred mess.  The stories seem to vary every time, but the ending is always the same. Whole families falling to the plague, communities wiped out. And only a sorry few survivors left to tell the tale.

3. A conflict
To the south, Mount Molin has blown its top. The old stories tell tales of the days when it would rip open the ground, spilling red hot sludge across the hillside like a weeping sore. The stories did not prepare them however for the darkness that would follow. The sky filled with ash until the sun was blotted out completely, while the earth ripped open, spouting noxious gasses into the air. No word has come from the surrounding lands for two weeks.

4. Wildcard
A three-legged dog. She seems to have recovered from whatever injured her, and it makes no impact on her speed or happiness. Her tail never stops wagging.
From the lone shieling of the misty island

Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas-

Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,

And we in dreams behold the Hebrides
