Character archetypes and fantasy tropes discussions
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:15:02 PM »
So someone in one of the NaNo Facbeook groups I'm a member of is doing a daily discussion thing that I thought we could bounce off of and use here. In the case of the group, the person is having the discussions about character archetypes, such as "dumb muscle" (i.e. Fezzik from The Princess Bride, Jayne from Firefly, etc), and they're posting pictures of characters as examples, and then the members discuss the archetype and give other examples of characters that fit the archetype.

What I thought we could do is basically do the same thing, and in our case we could discuss examples of TV show/movie/book characters that fit a specific archetype as well as any characters of our own that may fit the archetype that's being discussed.

I also thought that we could do the same thing for fantasy tropes/cliches/whichever term you prefer to call it.

So!

1. Is there any interest in this?
2. Should it be a daily or a weekly thing?
3. What character archetypes can you think of that would be fun to discuss?
4. What fantasy tropes can you think of that would be fun to discuss?
5. Do you know of specific websites that I can go to to find a list of fantasy tropes and character archetypes?

I did try to look a little bit earlier for some ideas but I wasn't 100% positive if one thing I'd found for the character archetypes was what I should go off of, so I decided to make a post asking for ideas/resources to find a list that we could go off of for discussions.

But first, let's see if we can come up with our own list of archetypes and tropes that we can use as discussion points.

Also, if someone brings up an archetype/trope that sparks a discussion idea in general, feel free to start a new topic for it!

Great idea! I'll work on this later and hope to come up with something!

Wikipedia has a good list of archetypes, as do a few different websites. I went looking for some ages ago. I can compile a list if you like. I am enjoying those posts and think it would be good to do here too because there are so many that can apply. And we can discuss what is good/bad about the archetype, and even talk about our characters in their archetypes.

If you can do that, or at least come up with a short list to start off with, that would be awesome.

Yeah, that's basically what I said in my post. :P

I'd like to see whether or not there's more interest in this (since only two people have responded) and I wanna know if it should be a daily or weekly thing. We could do a daily thing, and we can either do you and me rotating through or you me and Silver rotating through posting them.

To answer your questions directly:

1. Yes, at least from me. It could be educational, too.
2. Weekly. My time is limited - and I'm retired!
3. I'll wait for the list Sheepy-Pie is compiling, but the two that leap instantly to mind are the Chosen One and the Farm Boy Becomes King.
4. Again, I assume that Sheepy-pie's list will have these, but what jumps into my head are bad orcs, good and sophisticated elves, greedy gold-loving dragons, evil magicians on a power trip, and sudden gaining of magical powers.
5. No, I don't, sorry!

The thing is, I've used some of these myself, and I've enjoyed books that have them. So I'm glad you're calling it fun, rather than tossing these into the cliche category.

Well the only thing about doing it weekly as opposed to daily that I realized is that it means having to figure out a designated day to post the discussions, which...I mean, that's fine, if there's a REALLY good reason to do it that way. But the other thing is that really, it doesn't matter if it's daily because it's not like you can only respond to the discussion ON that day. If I post a discussion on Monday and you can't respond to it until Friday, that's totally fine. We won't stop you from responding to it. If anything, if the discussion has stalled a bit by Friday, you might revive it again by responding to it. Having it be daily would mean it being a constant thing, which means always having multiple discussions going on at once (which is a good thing for other things, too).

I'm interested but I don't have much time right now. Can I also suggest TV Tropes as a source of archetypes?

Yeah, I was already planning on using TV tropes for archetypes. :P

Once we get at least a few ideas for archetypes to pull from, we'll post at least one or two discussion topics and see how it goes.

Yay!

Any votes for the first archetype we should go for (that'll hopefully generate a lot of discussion)?
